COVID-19: Embrace the Grey

I was truly hoping that by the time I wrote another blog post Covid-19 would’ve been a thing of the past but it’s still going strong with case stats, projections, and restriction protocol consumed and spewed by media daily. Gosh, six months has flown by, hasn’t it?

We’ve celebrated holidays and birthdays, learned to communicate through masks and Zoom calls and probably even mastered some embedded skill or talent that we didn’t know we had. I’m certain we’ve all cycled emotionally too. Days of depression to unexpected days of elation, ones filled with frustration to the ones when we didn’t give a damn, and others with feelings so incredibly mixed, they were hard to discern, but if you’re anything like me, you landed in the grey area or in my case, purposefully placed yourself there. I’ve become quite comfortable with  ‘grey area’, adequately described as not black, not white, just right or by Wiktionary as ‘A topic that is not clearly one thing or the other, that is open to interpretation’. Its neutrality keeps me an arm’s length from falling down rabbit holes. It’s an idiomatic place I can hunker down in while the proverbial storm rages to keep my mind free of external clutter—conflicting news coverage and extremist points of view if I’m being honest, but it’s also given me something else . . .

The grey area has given me a reprieve from the chaos and the added bonus of clarity. I believe ‘everything happens for a reason’. As a society we’ve been working harder and sleeping less, putting more emphasis on glory than humility. Humility is devoid of self-importance; the ability to accept that too much focus on our own self is limiting, and not the best way. We need to connect with others, respect our variedness in approaches to life and put our focus back on what benefits the whole.

Connection is the essence of humankind. If we limit ourselves, we isolate ourselves. Hmm . . . perhaps Covid-19 and its ramifications of social distancing is teaching us the error of our ways? Forced to trial-run the devastating consequences of our narcissistic attitudes before it’s too late by experiencing what it means to be truly isolated from our families, our communities, and our societies while our psyches and what we perceive as reality are tripped-out on media sensationalism, economic breakdown and global disarray?

We’ve been undergoing a slow transformation for a long time, a spiritual awakening if you will, and I believe shifting from our self-absorbed hamster wheels to an isolating lockdown is the catalyst; our transformation has been sped up to unprecedented speeds via Covid-19, to capture our attention and/or hurry us along. But, is its reason for being to encourage us to focus on what’s primal and most important? I think it is, to an extent. It’s forcing us to slow down and be recluse, to take stock of ourselves and our place in the world; a world we all play an integral role in. All the pieces of a puzzle matter and we are definitely one big puzzle.

I understand the pandemic has been harsh for many, especially those who’ve suffered a great loss and my silver-lining isn’t meant to undermine anyone’s pain and hardship, but somewhere underneath the rubble and debris in the depths of grey area, there’s a powerful message trying to be heard—an ethereal rally-cry of sorts.

Connection begins from within. It’s acceptance and appreciation for all our differing perspectives, ideologies and splendour. Living isn’t about self-importance. It’s about transcending individualism and getting back to the basics; functioning as a unit and offering unconditional support and servitude, so we can all be lifted up with the hope of living our best lives.

‘Everything happens for a reason’. We don’t get here on our own, so we shouldn’t continue to live as if we do. The consequences are severe, even detrimental, to the inherent qualities which make us human. #cometogether #livestronger

I found clarity in the grey area. I invite you to join me . . . away from the chatter, opinions, conspiracy and overwhelm. There are messages to be heard in the grey area, and they’re monumental in size! Let’s have a listen, together, shall we?

Be Happy.
