Impactful Writing and Why it’s so Important
What is impactful writing you ask?
Dictionary Definition: Creating forceful impact by producing a marked impression; in other words . . . something EyE-CaTcHInG or Heart-stopping!
Why is it important?
Regardless of the profession we choose, regardless of the way we define ourselves, we are all writers. We are …Students crafting essays and presentations; Businesspeople crafting reports, sales letters, and proposals; Creatives crafting headlines, titles, and columns, or authors writing short stories, novellas, and full-length fiction or non-fiction books. And as writers . . . the one thing, I think we can all agree on, is we strive to express ourselves clearly and to create impact.
How can your writing be more impactful?
Let me preface my answer with . . . I’m still learning and still growing, too. And, although I’ve …
- earned an English degree
- taught Grammar, Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking skills to diverse populations
- professionally examined second-language speakers
- written traditionally and independently published books
- edited manuscripts using a holistic approach
…most importantly… it’s my passion for language, and that’s Passion with a Capital P, as it relates to crafting and editing something meaningful that keeps me coming back to ‘writing more impactfully.’
That said, everyone’s writing can be more impactful … and here’s how… when writing that first draft, simply INVOLVE YOUR AUDIENCE and STIR EMOTION right out of the gate. This will make your audience more open to receiving the information or ideas that you want to share with them. After all, emotion connects us and makes us feel like we belong.
By doing this, your writing might just transcend time, or at least be MEMORABLE enough to get shared with a close friend.
I like to involve my audience and stir emotion by adding a quote at the beginning of a chapter or to new sections in my books,
“The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t being said.”~Author Unknown
… and/or getting straight to the heart of a scene with that very first line.
“Why is my face hot?”~Voice of the Red Dragonfly
Tease your audience with something thought-provoking or snap them into a scene …it makes for unforgettable writing!
My writing might not be everyone’s flavour, and everyone has a different approach, but this is one tip that works for me.
